Raven Trickster of Miwok

trickster · United States · North America

The Raven is a genuine figure of Miwok mythology, a great hunter and one of the first animal people. In Southern Sierra Miwok tales, Raven (Kah'-kool) painted himself black with charcoal so the deer could not see him and became the successful hunter whose black plumage he still wears; in creation accounts, Raven (Kok'-kol) is among the first spirits whose feathers became the Miwok people.
