River Woman (Zapotec)
Not independently attested as a drowning or luring 'river woman' spirit in Zapotec folklore. The closest genuine Zapotec water-woman is Lucía Zenteno, 'The Woman Who Outshone the Sun,' a beautiful Zapotec woman of magic who was exiled by her jealous village and took the river's water away with her in punishment. Her story survives in the bilingual retelling of the Cuento popular zapoteco.
