Roc

bird · Saudi Arabia · Middle East and North Africa

The Roc (rukh) is a colossal mythical bird of Arabian Peninsula legend, said to be so huge it can carry elephants and darken the sky with its wings. A motif of the Thousand and One Nights and of Arab geographers' accounts (al-Qazwini, Ibn Battuta), it dwells on remote mountains and islands; its supposed bones explained fossil discoveries for medieval audiences.
