Roc
The Roc (rukh) is the giant bird of Arabian legend, large enough to carry an elephant in its talons. In the Sinbad voyages of the Thousand and One Nights, sailors mistake its egg for a dome and are lifted aloft when they cling to its leg. The roc also served medieval audiences as an explanation for giant fossil bones, and its home is placed on inaccessible mountain peaks and remote islands.
