Ruwa

deity · Tanzania · East Africa

Ruwa is the supreme god of the Chaga people of Tanzania, a solar deity dwelling on the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro. Ruwa resides in the sky alongside his consort the moon on Kibo peak. The mountain is the physical manifestation of Ruwa's presence -- its glaciers his crown, its forests his garments, its rivers his blessings. Sacrifices to Ruwa are performed at high noon in sacred groves on the mountain's slopes. Spirits of Chaga chiefs (Mangi) join Ruwa on the mountain, interceding for descendants. The Chaga believe the mountain's glaciers will never fully melt, for as long as they remain,
