Søtrold (sea troll) is a malevolent fjord-dwelling troll in Norwegian folklore, specific to the deep fjords of Vestlandet. Unlike mountain trolls that turn to stone in sunlight, the søtrold lives permanently in the dark fjord waters and is most active during storms. The søtrold makes terrible bargains with drowning sailors — it saves the ship in exchange for one of the sailors' children. If refused, the søtrold drags the entire ship and crew down.
