Salmon Chief Tsimshian
The Salmon Chief is the ruler of the salmon people, who in Northwest Coast belief don salmon coats each season. In the story recorded by Boas, a fisherman releases a talking salmon chief and is repaid with fortune; when he fails to keep the salmon bones, the chief's daughter tells him the bones are babies. The tale underlies the first-salmon rite and respect for the run.
