Salmon Guardian of Ojibwe

guardian · United States · North America

Not attested in Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) folklore. Ojibwe water spirits include Mishipeshu, the underwater panther of the Great Lakes, and the memegwesi little people, but salmon was not a traditional Great Lakes fish and no salmon guardian appears in Anishinaabe tradition. The entry transfers a coastal motif to an inland people.
