Samjoko
Samjoko (삼족오), the three-legged crow, is the solar bird of Korean mythology and the emblem of the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo (37 BCE–668 CE), later carried into Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon iconography. Believed to live in the sun while a toad dwelled in the moon, it appears as a black three-legged bird inside a solar disc across Goguryeo tomb murals, signifying heavenly mandate and royal authority. Recorded solar-crow imagery reaches the Korean peninsula from the 4th century and is studied in Samguk Sagi-era contexts and archaeological research on sun emblems.
