Sea Nymph

nature-spirit · Greece · Mediterranean

Sea nymphs are the female sea deities of Greek mythology — the fifty Nereids, daughters of Nereus, and the Oceanids — beautiful immortal maidens who dwell in the Mediterranean and assist sailors, escorting heroes and calming or stirring the waves. They appear throughout Homer and Hesiod and survive in folklore as beneficent sea spirits who guide and rescue those at sea.
