Sedna
Sedna is the great sea mother of the Inuit, mistress of the whales, seals and walruses, who lives in Adlivun beneath the ocean. A mortal girl who was thrown from her father's boat, she became the sea animals when her severed fingers were cut away. Hunters keep her favor by obeying taboos; when they fail, the angakkuq (shaman) must journey to comb her hair and free the animals she withholds.
