Selkie
Selkie is a shapeshifter from Iceland mythology. Found especially in Orkney, Shetland, and the Hebrides. The word 'selkie' derives from the Scots term selchie meaning 'grey seal.' These shape-shifting beings live as seals in the sea but can remove their pelts to walk on land as beautiful humans. Famous tales include 'The Selkie Wife,' 'The Great Selkie of Sule Skerry,' 'Gioga's Son' from Papa Stour, and 'Donald the Seal Hunter' from Shetland.
