Faro is a powerful water deity in Mandinka and Bambara (Mandé) mythology, revered across Senegal, Mali, and The Gambia as a purifying force that brings cosmic order, speech, and fertility to the world. In Mandé creation narratives, Faro sacrificed himself to atone for the sins of his twin brother Pemba, being cut into sixty pieces that fell to earth and became trees. The supreme creator Mangala restored Faro to life in human form, sending him to earth in an ark made from his placenta carrying the first ancestors, animals, and plants.
