Shahmaran ('King of Snakes') is a mythical half-woman, half-snake being revered in Azerbaijani, Turkish and Kurdish folklore: the immortal queen of serpents, keeper of profound wisdom and healing power. In Azerbaijani variants the legend is known in Nakhchivan, Lankaran and the Araz River basin. The tale of Cəmşab recounts how her wisdom passed to a legendary healer.
