The Shalako are tall, ten-foot kachina messengers of the Zuni, beings of great spiritual power who appear each winter. During the Shalako ceremony, six Shalako—each the horned, feathered impersonation of a rain-bringing spirit—visit the newly built ceremonial houses, blessing the homes and the people.
