Shamans are ritual practitioners, not spirits: among the Tlingit the shaman (íx̲t) gained power from spirit helpers to heal, find lost souls and combat witchcraft; among the Inuit the angakkuq serves the community and speaks with the sea mother Sedna. The record uses 'Shaman' as a generic spirit entry; the genuine figure is the human medicine person of each nation's tradition.
