Shetani
Shetani (Swahili, from Arabic shaytan) are malevolent spirits of East African popular belief (Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique), especially among the Makonde. They appear as distorted, asymmetrical human-animal hybrids—cyclopic, one-limbed, exaggerated orifices. Makonde carve shetani in ebony/blackwood; artist George Lilanga (1934–2005) gained fame for shetani sculptures.
