Sidi Mimoun
Sidi Mimoun is one of the mluk, the possessors, the jnun of the Moroccan Gnawa pantheon. He is a black spirit; possession by him often obliges the possessed to cut themselves with knives. Like the other mluk he has his own songs, colour, incense and offerings, invoked during the lila ceremony. The Gnawa are descendants of sub-Saharan Africans brought to Morocco as slaves, and the names of the mluk preserve Hausa, Fulani and Bambara origins.
