Sikakokuh's spirit dog
In the Hopi story told by Harold Courlander, the boy Sikakokuh owns an extraordinary hunting dog that is no ordinary animal: it tracks game without fail, warns its master of danger, and seems to understand human speech. The tale, 'Sikakokuh and the hunting dog,' shows the dog acting as a spirit helper and guardian, an example of the animal helpers common in Pueblo oral tradition.
