Skiftingen (also called Bytting) is the Danish changeling — a troll or Bjergfolk infant secretly exchanged for a human baby. The changeling is ugly, sickly, never grows, and has an enormous appetite. It cries constantly but also shows unnaturally adult intelligence — it may speak in rhymes, comment on ancient events, or demonstrate knowledge no infant should possess.
