Skookum, from Chinook Jargon meaning 'strong' or 'powerful,' names the mountain giants and evil spirits of Pacific Northwest tradition. In Chinook folklore the wild man of the woods, called Boqs, Siatco, Sasquatch or Skookum, is a large, hairy forest being, usually a dangerous man-eater though sometimes benign.
