Skunk

animal · United States · North America

Skunk appears in Comanche trickster tales as a clever animal who often outwits Coyote. In the famous story Skunk Outwits Coyote, Skunk finds Coyote trying to catch prairie dogs by blocking their holes and waiting with his mouth open. Skunk offers to help, then instead of driving prairie dogs toward Coyote, walks up and sprays him in the face. Coyote runs away howling, and the prairie dogs escape. Skunk proves that even the cleverest schemer can be outsmarted, and that brute force does not always prevail
