Sentient Shadow (Skyggen)

spirit · Denmark · Nordic

Skyggen (The Shadow) is a literary character from Andersen's 1847 fairy tale 'The Shadow,' where a learned man's shadow detaches, gains sentience, and usurps his life. Inspired by Chamisso's 'Peter Schlemihl' (1814). No Danish folk tradition attests sentient shadows as independent beings. The input record misattributes a literary tale to oral folklore.
