Dhegdheer

demon · Somalia · East Africa

Dhegdheer, meaning 'Long Ear' in Somali, is a fearsome cannibalistic demon from Somali folklore who hunts in forests and preys primarily on lost or wandering children. Once a mortal woman whose selfishness and greed led a curse to transform her into a monster, Dhegdheer possesses supernatural hearing that allows her to detect even the faintest sounds from great distances. She is closely associated with the Hargega Valley and the Caves of Xargega in the Sanaag region of northern Somalia. Her legend is so deeply embedded in Somali culture that children are warned not to wander far from home lest
