Soucouyant

vampire · Saint Vincent and the Grenadines · Caribbean

The soucouyant is a shape-shifting, blood-sucking hag of Vincentian folklore, documented by Charles Day in 'Five Years in the West Indies'. She sheds her skin at night and flies as a ball of fire to drain her victims' blood. Vincentian homes are protected with salt in doorways and garlic, and belief in the soucouyant is tied to Obeah.
