South Wind
South Wind is an old man in Chinook tradition who travels north along the coast. Passing the house of a giant old woman, he caught a small whale and, against her warning, cut it crossways; the cut whale turned into a huge bird. Because of this, the Chinook have always slit salmon down the back rather than across the body.
