Sphinx
The sphinx is a composite guardian creature of Egyptian and Greek tradition, joining a human head to a lion's body. In Egypt it was a colossal, often royal image of divine kingship and solar power; in Greece it became the riddling, man-eating Sphinx of Thebes, a symbol of dangerous knowledge that only a true answer defeats. The hybrid figure recurs across the Near East and Mediterranean.
