Stökkull
Stökkull (the Jumper) is the most feared of all the illhveli (evil whales) in Icelandic folklore, despite not being the largest. Stökkull has a distinctive rounded body, dark above and white below, 8-20 meters long, with a battering-ram snout. Its most remarkable feature is the flaps of skin (blinders) that cover its eyes — it must leap completely out of the water to see. According to Navigatio Sancti Brendani, Saint Brendan prayed to God to give Stökkull these blinders to limit its destructive power. When Stökkull leaps, it pile-drives ships underneath it, smashing them to pieces. The sight o
