Standing Rock
Standing Rock, the stone formation on the Missouri in what is now North Dakota, is a petrified human in Lakota tradition: a young woman turned to stone, in some tellings a jealous Dakota wife. The Arikara, who also lived at the site, told of the Great Spirit turning a woman to rock. The landmark later became a symbol of Indigenous water-rights protests.
