Suv Peri (Water Fairies) are mythical water spirits from Turkmen folklore inhabiting the Caspian Sea coast and rivers such as the Amu Darya. According to Turkmen tradition, the Amu Darya mermaids are tender, sweet-voiced, and mysterious, following traditional Central Asian standards of beauty. However, the water maidens of the Caspian Sea and southern rivers are treacherous, dangerous, and have a frightening dark coloration.
