Sweet Medicine
Sweet Medicine (Motsé'eóeve) is the greatest prophet and law-giver of the Cheyenne people. He journeyed to Nóávóse (Bear Butte) in the Black Hills where Ma'heo'o gave him the four sacred arrows (Maahótse)—two for hunting success and two for warfare. He received the structure of Cheyenne government (Council of Forty-Four), the military societies, the legal system, and the Sun Dance ceremony. Beginning as a troublesome trickster figure, he transformed into a wise lawgiver.
