St. Sylvester's Dragon
Sylvester's Dragon is a legendary dragon from Vatican and Roman Christian tradition that was defeated by Pope Sylvester I (314-335 AD). According to the Golden Legend, a massive dragon dwelled in a deep cave beneath the Roman Forum, and its poisonous breath killed thousands of Romans daily. Emperor Constantine asked Pope Sylvester to deal with the beast. Sylvester descended into the cave, recited prayers, and bound the dragon's mouth with thread, sealing it forever. The dragon is said to have been buried under the steps of the Temple of the Dioscuri, near the Roman Forum. This legend establish
