Tāne Mahuta
Tāne Mahuta is the Māori god of forests and birds, the son of Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) who forced the two apart to let light into the world. He clothed his mother's body with trees and creatures, fathered the birds and insects, and created the first woman Hineahuone. The famous kauri tree Tāne Mahuta in Waipoua Forest bears his name.
