Ta'aroa

deity · Polynesia · Pacific

Ta'aroa is the supreme creator god of Tahitian tradition, who existed alone within a cosmic shell and emerged to create the world. In the account recorded by William Ellis, Ta'aroa embraced a rock — the imagined foundation of all things — which brought forth the earth and the sea, and he ordered his son the Sky-producer to call into being the heavens, sun, moon, and stars, and every living thing.
