God of forests, birds, and all living creatures within the forest. Tane is the son of Ranginui and Papatuanuku who braced his shoulders against his mother and pushed his feet against his father, forcing them apart and letting light into the world. He then adorned his father's bare body with the stars. Tane created the first woman, Hineahuone, from the earth, and with her fathered Hinetitama. He is the father of all trees, birds, and insects.
