Tangaroa
God of the sea, oceans, rivers, lakes, and all water bodies. Tangaroa is a son of Ranginui and Papatuanuku. After the separation of his parents, Tawhirimatea drove Tangaroa into the ocean depths where he has remained. He is the father of all fish, reptiles, and sea creatures. His descendants include Ikatere (father of fish) and Tu-te-wehiwehi (father of reptiles). When Tane Mahuta offered shelter to the reptiles on land, they abandoned Tangaroa, causing an eternal enmity between forest and sea. The sea forever consumes the shore, and Tane's creatures hide from the ocean's reach
