Taniwha
Taniwha are supernatural beings of Māori tradition who dwell in rivers, lakes, deep pools, and the sea, guarding tribal waterways and landmarks. Some, like Ngake and Whātaitai, are protective kaitiaki linked to hapū and iwi; others are feared man-eaters who seize travellers. They may appear as giant lizards, sharks, whales, or serpents, their presence marking dangerous waters.
