Tata Duende is one of Belize's most famous mythical creatures — a powerful forest spirit that protects animals and the jungle. Described as a small, bearded man about three feet tall who wears a wide-brimmed red hat, animal skins for clothing, and has his feet pointing backwards. He notably lacks thumbs. Parents warn children never to show Tata Duende their thumbs, or he will break or bite them off.
