Tengri
Tengri is the supreme sky god of the Turkic peoples, the eternal blue sky whose worship long preceded Islam in Central Asia. Creator and sustainer above all spirits, he was honoured by shamans and steppe nomads with open-air rites on high ground. Kazakh reverence for Tengri still echoes in proverbs and in prayerful raising of the hands to the sky.
