Tepuhi

serpent · Tuvalu · Pacific

Tepuhi is the founding ancestor of Nanumaga atoll in Tuvalu, a spirit who is said to have come from Fiji in the form of a sea serpent and to have established the island's people. Unlike Nanumea's ancestor Tefolaha, who came from Tonga as a half-human hero, Tepuhi's serpent form ties Nanumaga's origin to the ocean and to the spirit world.
