Thunderbird (Chinook)
In Chinook tradition, Thunderbird began as a whale that Old Man South Wind cut crossways despite the ogress Quoots-hooi's warning, transforming into an immense bird whose wings hid the sun and shook the earth. Flying to Saddle Mountain near the Columbia River it laid a nest of eggs; the ogress broke them, and each egg became a Chinook person. Hence the first salmon is never cut across the back.
