Thủy Tinh (literally 'Water Spirit' or 'Water God') is the powerful deity of waters, seas, and floods in Vietnamese mythology. In the famous legend from the Hùng King period, Thủy Tinh sought to marry the beautiful princess Mỵ Nương but lost to his rival Sơn Tinh (Mountain Spirit), who arrived first with wedding gifts. Enraged by jealousy and humiliation, Thủy Tinh summoned storms, raised the waters, and unleashed floods against the mountains to destroy Sơn Tinh and reclaim the princess.
