Tide Woman Tlingit

human · United States · North America

Tlingit storytellers recount how Raven made the tides, teaching the ocean to rise and fall. In the tale of how the tides began, the tide-water is kept by an old woman, in some versions Raven's grandmother, and Raven tricks her into releasing the water so the beaches can be walked and the sea fished.
