Tin Hinan is the legendary ancestral queen of the Tuareg people, one of the most revered figures in Algerian and broader Saharan folklore. According to legend, Tin Hinan was a noblewoman who traveled from the Tafilalt oasis in the Atlas Mountains, leading her people across the Sahara to settle in the Hoggar Mountains of southern Algeria. Her arrival marked the beginning of the Tuareg civilization in the central Sahara.
