Tlaltecuhtli

deity · Mexico · Mesoamerica

Tlaltecuhtli, 'Earth Lord,' is the Aztec primordial earth monster, a dually sexed being with gnashing mouths at every joint. In creation myth, Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca tore her body apart in the primeval waters; her flesh became the earth, her hair the plants, her eyes the caves. She must still be fed, for her cry for human hearts underwrites Aztec sacrifice.
