Tokoloshe

spirit · Lesotho · Southern Africa

The tokoloshe, known in Sotho-speaking regions as the hili or thokolosi, is the water-dwelling dwarf of Basotho tradition in Lesotho, sent by sorcerers to torment their enemies. About the size of a small child with a disproportionately large head, it is invisible to most people and acts at night, bringing illness, nightmares or ruin. Families still raise bed-legs on bricks against it.
