Tokoloshe
The tokoloshe is the mischievous, water-dwelling dwarf-spirit of Zulu and Xhosa (Nguni) belief in South Africa: child-sized with an oversized head, invisible except to the supernaturally gifted. Witches and izangoma deploy it to bring misfortune, illness, nightmares or death, while people sleep with beds raised on bricks to thwart it. The belief remains widespread and explains inexplicable harm.
