Tsuchinoko is a cryptid of modern Japanese folklore, a thick-bodied, snake-like creature with a stout middle, a thin tail, viper-like fangs, and potent venom. Witnesses claim it moves with a rolling or inchworm motion, can jump up to two meters, and even drinks sake. Sightings surged after the 1988 'Tsuchinoko Expedition' in Shimokitayama, Nara, where a local bounty fueled fascination.
