Tule Tree Spirit
The spirit of the Tule is bound to the great Ahuehuete cypress at Santa María del Tule in Oaxaca, among the stoutest trees on Earth. Zapotec tradition says it was planted by Pechocha, a priest of the wind god Ehécatl, or by the Mixe ruler Condoy, who planted it from a staff. It is revered as the living memory of the peoples, and 'so long as it lives, their memory lives.'
