Tunche

spirit · Peru · South America

The Tunche is a fearsome whistling spirit of the Peruvian Amazon (Shipibo-Conibo, Asháninka traditions). It mimics bird calls and human voices to lure travelers off paths at night. Its whistle signals approaching death. Described as a shadowy, faceless entity or a glowing presence. Fearlessness and spiritual protection (tobacco, ayahuasca) can ward it off.
